Yes, I'm sure there is. Discovery is important, but from everyhing I see, it is the deployment that's the bottleneck. Imagine if current science was applied to GD appointments straight away (currently can take 20 years for new ideas to diffuse to practice). That's why the customer-focus: most science has already been invented that is needed to solve the problems of humanity. Even the self-driving electric car is mostly made up of components that were invented 20-50 years ago. I know people who did their PhD's on Neural Networks aka artificial intelligence 35 years ago...
