Great summary! One of my main arguments (which I have yet to fully articulate but will do so in the future) is that many of the more human things that make organisations good or bad are not zero-sum but win win. The simplest example (which I think is fairly rigorously researched, but there’s never such a thing as “fully proven”) is that being a kind and empathetic boss (of course, situation-specifically and selectively—it doesn’t always work) not only makes your team members feel, and often perform, better, but also makes you as the boss happier (because being kind actually triggers the right kind of brain chemicals for you, too, to feel good about yourself; and because if you feel this way you are more likely to be kind and empathetic the next time; and because if your team is feeling and performing better, it’s kind of nice). It’s a shame so many of the bosses out there have been educated on a different logic of command and control. Unlearning that is not easy when you are older and, in many cases, have been “successful” — while (in my view) probably taking slightly insufficient care of your people’s wellbeing.
